It is part of the collection “Reliefs of Piranhas”. It commemorates the Emperor’s journey through the state of Alagoas, when he passed through the towns of Piaçabuçu, Penedo, São Braz, Traipu, Pão de Açucar and Piranhas. Dom Pedro traveled by ship up to Piranhas from where he continued overland, in the company of 200 gentlemen from the region, to the Falls of Paulo Afonso (BA). He was assassinated when he was reading the newspaper on his porch in Pedra at 54 years of age. The well mannered man who commanded the leather business in the city of Recife until 1911, had come to change the characteristics of the arid hinterland in the state of Alagoas by building his empire in the village of Pedra. Today the city bears his name. Till the arrival of the pioneer in 1913, the hamlet consisted of only five houses. Delmiro was the benefactor, the father, the king of all the arid hinterland&lt;br /&gt;region, in only four years building an electrical power plant and the Company Agro Fabril Mercantil, a sewing thread factory which employed more than 800 locals. The ancients say that the Governor’s Palace was placed in front of the church so that it could receive blessings from heaven. During the days before the festivities of Our Lady of Conception, on the eight of December, the church is decorated with colourful banners. The people there come to celebrate the date of their protectress. The participants take to the streets from the suburbs and rural regions around the towns.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nowadays the Bumba-meu-Boi, Boi de tambor, Boi de Mina, Mimoso, and all the others are very popular in all Brazilian states, and the federal, state and municipal governments help keep this entertainment going.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At carnival, the Bull parades, announces the plot of the play, generally a drama in which a black cowherd, much trusted by his boss, steals from him to satisfy the fancy of his woman of pure Indian blood, who is pregnant and desires to eat the meat of “Mimoso”, the boss’ favorite bull. The innocent white boss sends his cowherd out to find the bull. And this is what the drama is all about, a low act of disloyalty enacted with the aim of killing the boss’ bull.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the state of Maranhão, beside the necessary participants in the drama, there are the Indian women, the cowherds, the young man, the shaman, the priest, the doctor, the clown, the creole, the female donkey and others. In the other states one can easily find versions with other characters like the harlequin, Dona Maria, Virgulino, the imp, the giant, the overseer, the royal pure blooded Indian, the captain, the ostrich, the hunter and so on. The traditional “masked balls” are no fun without these personages of the influential aristocracy of any period of time. Elegant ladies and gallant gentlemen show themselves in fancy dress, some as Harlequin, others as Pierrot and still others as Columbina. They represent the imagined amorous triangle.&lt;br /&gt;The plot and such personages are fruits of famous artists’ imaginations. In 1892 Leon Carvallo imagined them within the conflict of an amorous triangle in “The Clowns”. In 1905 Picasso painted the “Family of Harlequins” and used the figures in other paintings as well. Degas and Cézanne are among the many who also painted their “Harlequin”. Brazilian literature recognizes them; in 1919 with “Carnaval” by Manuel Bandeira. In 1920, with “Máscaras” by Menotti del Picchia, and “Arlequinada” by Martins Fontes. Mário de Andrade placed them definitely into carnival in their vários forms and defined them as harlequin creatures.
